Coordination of European Research on Industrial Safety towards Smart and Sustainable Growth

Advanced materials and technologies, robotics and AI to improve health, safety and sustainability

9th joint call

SAF€RA launched its ninth joint call for transnational, collaborative research projects on Februay 5th, 2025. The call title is Advanced materials and technologies, robotics and AI to improve health, safety and sustainability, with two topics:

  • Topic 1: Applications of advanced materials and advanced technologies to reduce worker exposure to SoC and SVHC

The call aims to explore the potential of advanced materials and technologies to improve health, safety and sustainability in industry.

In the context of European research , advanced materials, also named renewable replacement chemicals in the literature, are understood as materials that are rationally designed to have (i) new or enhanced properties, and/or (ii) targeted or enhanced structural features with the objective to achieve specific or improved functional performance. This includes both new emerging manufactured materials (high-tech materials), and materials that are manufactured from traditional materials (low tech materials). They might, for example, replace hazardous chemicals such as Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) or other chemical substances of concern (SoC , ) and substances of very high concern (SVHC), and therefore reduce the exposure of workers to these substances.

Replacement with multifunctional green materials as well as digital advanced technologies such as AI, Internet of Things, industrial data, Big Data, blockchain, quantum computing perhaps spilling over into, advanced manufacturing, robotics, additive manufacturing and 3D printing, might help find new formulations or new processes that have fewer negative effects on the workforce.

The research needs to address both, the regulatory framework and policy development for renewable replacement materials and supporting technologies in occupational health and safety, extending to any technological development that can deliver on the aim.

  • Topic 2: Robotics and Artificial Intelligence in the context of health, safety and sustainability

Artificial intelligence (AI) systems  are increasingly important as a digital tool in the workplace, enhancing productivity and performance across various sectors. In OSH, AI has particularly valuable applications, such as reducing accidents, preventing fatalities and maximising near-miss reporting. However, integrating AI into safety-critical roles presents unique challenges. One key issue is the difficulty of validating and certifying “black box” deep learning models, especially those with self-evolving behaviour. These challenges limit the deployment of AI in safety-critical functions, where they must often meet stringent regulatory requirements.

The objective of the research call is to investigate the use and impact of “trustworthy” AI-based components in industrial safety applications and the health sector, focusing on how validation and certification issues impact AI adoption.

  • The total available budget for the 2025 call is approx. 1.25 M€. Two forms of funding are available:

    • “in cash”: research grants for researchers from universities, institutes, research   organizations and public firms;

    • “in kind”: person-months for personnel from certain participating institutes and research   organizations.

Most projects funded within this call will include 2 to 4 partners, for a duration between 12 and 36 months and funding between 20 and 150 k€ per project partner. The call aims to fund mainly applied research carried out in universities or research institutes, though contributions from industry are also eligible. Interdisciplinary research is encouraged. Cooperation and joint activities between different consortia funded within the call will be encouraged.

  • The 2025 joint call will use a two-stage application process with a pre-proposal mechanism for the first stage. The calendar of the various stages is shown below.

    • Publication of the call - February 5th, 2025

    • SAF€RA symposium and brokerage event at ICSI 2025 (International Conference on Safety and Innovation) - March 12th, 2025 in Rome

    • Deadline for submissions of pre-proposals - March 28th, 2025 at 16:00 CET

    • Information sent to applicants on results of the first stage. Requests for full proposals are sent to selected applicants, and collaborations proposed to single-nation applicants - Mid-April 2025

    • Deadline for submission of full proposals -  June 27th, 2025

    • National funding decisions transmitted to applicants - Early October 2025

    • Projects start - Beginning 2026

    • The Guidelines for proposers contains a description of the topics covered by the 2025 joint call, information on the participating funding organizations and the budgets available, and other important information for researchers wishing to submit a proposal.

    • The pre-proposal form to use to prepare pre-proposals in the first stage of the call.

    • The Guidelines for evaluators are written for the experts who will evaluate the projects, but will be useful to researchers who wish to understand the evaluation criteria.

    • Templates for the SAF€RA progress reports, which must be sent to the SAF€RA Call Secretariat by the project coordinator on behalf of the project consortium. The mid-term reporting template should be submitted halfway through your project, assuming the project has a duration greater than 18 months. A final administrative report should be sent by all projects, within three months of the end of the project. (This report is distinct from the final scientific report which most projects will be producing as one of their deliverables.)

  • For general queries concerning the joint call, please email the call secretariat at call-secretariat@safera.eu.

If you have questions concerning the eligibility criteria of specific funding organizations, please check the contact information provided in the Guidelines for proposers document, which can be downloaded above.
